Say thank you to President Clinton

My dad is usually the first to say that it’s people like you, working together who create change in the world. And I couldn’t agree more.

I also think he deserves a big “thank you” for everything he’s done in the past year – especially the inspiring work that doesn’t make the headlines, like personally checking on the progress of a soy factory in Rwanda this summer and helping give more American kids access to healthy meals throughout the school year.

Save progressive radio in Seattle

It was just announced that AM 1090 will drop progressive talk and switch to an all sports format after the first of the year.

Progressive radio listeners in the greater Seattle area are appalled at the prospect of losing the great progressive radio shows hosted by Ed Shultz, Thom Hartmann, Norman Goldman, Randi Rhodes, Stephanie Miller and others.

Please join us in letting AM 1090’s advertisers know that we, their customers, want progressive voices be heard! We need AM 1090 to stay progressive… or for another local station to take its place as Seattle’s progressive voice.

That’s why I created a petition on SignOn.org to the advertisers and program director at Seattle AM Radio Station 1090, which says:

Don’t let Seattle lose progressive radio! As a local radio listener, I pledge to support with my dollars any advertiser on any station that chooses to broadcast progressive programming.

AFGE request: Take action to support Soc. Sec., Medicare & Medicaid, December 5th

On Wednesday, December 5th, AFGE Local 3937 will lead actions statewide  to support Social Security, Medicare & Medicaid. The locations and times are below. The message will be:
–    No cuts to Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid, including cost of living adjustments

–     No more office closings, reduced service hours, pushing of Internet self-service, or staffing cuts

–     Release the funding SSA needs to restore lost services working families have already paid for

 

Labor and community organization members are welcome to join us, and bring banners and signs.  Representatives of organizations who would like to say a few words of concern and support are asked to contact our spokespersons.

EIS public scoping meeting on Gateway Pacific Terminal, Cherry Point (Coal trains) – 12/13

The EIS public scoping meeting for the proposed Gateway Pacific Terminal is coming up soon!

4-7 p.m. Thursday, December 13
Washington State Convention Center, Ballroom 6F
800 Convention Place
Seattle, WA

 

The facility will ship Powder River Basin (WY) coal overseas, with the coal traveling from WY to Cherry Point via downtown Seattle in uncovered cars. Opponents at a preliminary meeting I attended this summer stated that this would double rail traffic in Seattle, affecting noise levels and surface street traffic flow in our area. I do not know if this is true but hope to attend the scoping meeting to learn more.

Scoping meetings in other counties have attracted hundreds of attendees, so expect a full house.

PSARA:Nov. 28 call Congress-No Cuts to Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security

Puget Sound Advocates for Retirement Action: Uniting Generations for a Secure Future

Tuesday, November 28, President Jeff Johnson of the WA State Labor Council, AFL-CIO will be in D.C. He will be urging our Congressional delegation not to support any “grand compromise” that cuts Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid.

Jeff has asked us to to support his efforts on that day. Please call our U.S. Senators and your Congressional Representative.

Toll free # is 1-888-659-9401. The message is:

  1. Any compromise must not include cuts to Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid. These include reducing the COLA or Raising the Age of Eligibility.
  2. Any compromise must include an end to the Bush era tax cuts on income over $250,000.

If you have called before, please do it again…it makes a difference. Multiple phone calls are essential!

Restructuring Renton Service for RapidRide F

While Metro won’t be making any changes in north-central Seattle with the opening of RapidRide E next September, the agency is proposing some minor changes to the bus network in Renton with the concurrent opening of RapidRide F. The F Line will replace Route 140, boosting peak headways to ten minutes, and extending frequent service into the evening and weekend; Metro is also seeking funding for an extension of the F Line to The Landing, an urban village development a couple of miles north from the 140′s eastern terminus at Renton Transit Center.

The are five routes near the 140 alignment which Metro proposes to modify or delete:

  • Deleting Route 110. This seems to be a Sounder-Boeing commuter shuttle with very modest ridership numbers, which duplicates the 140 for much of its length, and is within a quarter to a third of a mile of the Landing extension for almost all the rest of its length.
  • Deleting underperforming DART route 908, replacing most of its fixed route with minor changes to DART 909 and Route 105.
  • Converting the little-used hourly Route 155 to a DART route.

We have all worked so hard for this year’s election victories. We will have a lot to celebrate at our annual Holiday Party.

Our Holiday Party is our annual end-of-the-year event, where elected officials, party leaders, activists, volunteers, and all Democrats gather to look back on the year and get ready for the year ahead.

This year, along with celebrating a great election year, we will also be honoring our guest and wonderful Governor, Chris Gregoire, for her years of service to our state.
