Want to keep election officials from blocking your vote? There’s an app for that!

This fall, restrictive new voting laws in more than a dozen states could keep millions of people from

exercising their constitutional right to vote. ID and birth certificate requirements, restrictions on

early voting, and shutdowns on election day registration happen to affect non-rich, non-white,

non-middle-aged, non-male voters most. This flurry of regulatory activity could confound Jane and John

Q. Public: how are citizens supposed to know whether they need an ID, license plate number, proof of

insurance, blood sample and baptism certificate in order to cast their vote? The answer might be in the

interwebs.

The Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law has partnered with a bunch of other voting rights

groups to launch a free downloadable “Election Protection” app that will allow voters to verify their

registration status, fill out a voter registration form, look up their polling place, and access info on

key rules and dates tailored to their state. Users are also prompted to call Election Protection’s

hotline to alert the organization to election day abnormalities or concerns.

Accurately Summarizing Rob McKenna’s Lousy Month

From Publicola:

DC political site Politico says Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jay Inslee won the month of July, accurately summarizing Rob McKenna’s lousy month: Tweetgate, Essex Portergate (or should we say gait), and the Supreme Court’s Obamacare ruling, which went against cocky plaintiff McKenna and led to sometortured exchanges with the press.

Politico says the next test is who wins the August primary, which we say will most certainly go to McKenna. The low-turnout August vote favors the Republican and the candidate with statewide name ID. In both instances, that’s Attorney General McKenna.

Why Are Charter Schools Advocates Spending Heavily on a Candidate Who Says She Doesn’t Support Charter Schools?

From the SLOG:

We kinda liked Stephanie Bowman at our 11th Legislative District SECB interview, but gave our endorsement to Rob Holland for a number of reasons, not the least of which being our unease over Bowman’s endorsement by charter schools advocate Stand for Children. Bowman told us she opposed charter schools. But in politics, money tends to follow votes.

Well, since her SECB interview our suspicions have only been further confirmed by generous “independent” expenditures on Bowman’s behalf. Stand for Children has spent $18,749 supporting Bowman, and the pro-charter Education Voters PAC $19,269… both through media consultant Amplified Strategies. In fact, Bowman is by far the number one beneficiary of Stand for Children’s many independent expenditures this cycle on top of the maximum $1,800 they also contributed to her campaign.

Bezos Family Funds Four PACs in Charter Schools Shell Game

At first it was a bit remarkable to see four separate charter school PACs—Stand for Children WA PAC, Democrats for Education Reform WA PAC, Revising the Status Quo PAC, and Education Voters Political Action Fund—all spending money in a handful of Seattle area legislative primaries. Remarkable, that is, until I peeked behind the PDC curtain and pretty much found one PAC masquerading as four.

Stand for Children, the best financed of the three, has raised $163,800 from just 17 contributors, with almost half its money coming from Jeff Bezos’ dad. Education Voters has raised $75,190 from just four contributors, almost all of it coming from Bezos’ parents. Democrats for Education Reform comes off as only slightly more democratic, raising $55,450 from 20 contributors, including $15,000 from Bezos’ parents. And Revising the Status Quo has raised $8,915 from 21 contributors, $6,000 of which came from Stand and Democrats for Education Reform.
